Incident Summary:
On 12/14/19 at approximately noon, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Arrowhead Volunteer Fire Dept, and Floodwood Ambulance, responded to a report of a stranded snowmobiler, approximately 5 miles south of the intersection of Hwy 2 and the Nygaard Road in Arrowhead Township.
The snowmobiler, Adam Kalahar, was on the snowmobile trail crossing a swampy area near Lake Thiry-six, when he became stuck in a slushy area. Kalahar began to walk back toward Hwy 2, as he was wet and cold. The Rescue Squad set up a command post near Headquarters Lake and then located Kalahar on the trail approximately 3 miles away. The Rescue Squad then was able to locate the stuck snowmobile approximately 4 miles from the command post, free it, and drive it out also, to prevent a future call out. Kalahar was treated by Floodwood Ambulance at the scene and released.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that several bodies of water / swamps are not yet frozen due to the large amount of snowfall. This particular trail had not been groomed and although it may appear safe, under the snow is slush, and sometimes very little ice. Taking unnecessary risks only puts you in danger and also places first responders in danger during Search and Rescue efforts.
