Incident Summary:
On 10/28/19 at approximately 0810 hours, St. Louis County Deputies were dispatched to a water emergency on the West side of WILD RICE LAKE RESERVOIR in Canosia Township. It was reported that two duck hunters had capsized while retrieving a duck. Upon arrival, responders found that Brickley had canoed out to retrieve a duck when the canoe capsized. Brickley had a life jacket on and was able to swim approximately 100 yards back to shore, where his hunting partner Friday was. Once on shore, Friday took off his outer garments to keep Brickley warm and they called 911 realizing they were probably both going to be hypothermic. First Responders were aided by another hunter in the area with a canoe, Andrew Whiteman, by paddling initial responders to Brickley and Friday prior to Rescue Squad boats arriving on scene.
Brickley credits his wearing of a life jacket, as "life saving". Both Brickley and Friday were transported to Essentia St. Mary's in Duluth for precautionary measures. Both were conscious and alert. Agencies included St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Canosia Volunteer Fire Department, Mayo Ambulance.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to stress the importance of wearing Personal Floatation Devices (PFD's) and having a plan should an emergency arise, especially due to the changing weather conditions and water temperatures.
