County building reopens in Virginia following brief evacuation

(note to media: Update corrects error in headline)

The St. Louis County Government Services Center-Virginia has re-opened following a brief evacuation on reports of a potential gas leak late this morning.

A transformer adjacent to the Northland Office Building, which currently is being torn down, was damaged during demolition, causing a power outage affecting portions of the downtown area, as well as a possible gas leak.

All employees and visitors were safely evacuated to the St. Louis County Courthouse in Virginia. No injuries were reported.

The gas leak has now been contained and the Government Services Center-Virginia has re-opened.

“We are thankful for the quick response by all involved – the Virginia Fire and Police Departments, as well as our staff,” said County Administrator Kevin Gray. “Everyone moved quickly to ensure safety for all.”
