Volunteer genealogist earns statewide recognition

The longtime volunteer genealogist in the St. Louis County Recorder’s Office has been honored by the Minnesota Genealogical Society for her service. Joanne Sher received the Minnesota Genealogy Ambassador Award on October 4, 2019. The Ambassador Award is given in recognition for representing Minnesota on the national genealogy scene and bringing honor to Minnesota genealogy.

Sher has been the volunteer genealogist in the St. Louis County Recorder’s Office for 17 years. She is a professional genealogist, serves on the board of directors of the Foundation for East European Family History Studies, and has spoken at a number of genealogy conferences across the United States.

Sher volunteers every Thursday at the Recorder's Office in Duluth, helping people find old birth, death and marriage certificates that aren't always easily accessible. There is no fee to the public for her work other than the cost of making copies of the records she finds.

"Joanne is a well-respected professional and an extremely valuable resource," said Wendy Levitt, Chief Deputy County Recorder. "Our customers and staff rely on her knowledge and expertise, so we are pleased to see her received this well-deserved recognition."
