Fall Garden Fest celebrates "The Italian Garden"

Tomatoes, garlic and other garden goodies that are hallmarks of Italian cooking will be the star ingredients at St. Louis County Extension's annual Fall Garden Fest. "The Italian Garden" will be Thursday, October 10, at 5:30 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church, 2410 Morris Thomas Road in Duluth.

The event is designed for gardeners and cooks, with tips on preparing garden vegetables for canning, freezing, and eating. Mary Kay Berarducci of Va Bene Caffe will share and demonstrate some of her favorite Italian recipes; Horticulturist Bob Olen will offer proven techniques for growing tomatoes and garlic in northern Minnesota; and Extension's Nicole Kudrle will demonstrate canning and freezing techniques.

Also on the agenda: an opportunity to taste test Italian dishes prepared by Master Gardeners, plus an Italian veggie dish contest. The cooking contest is open to all, but advance registration is required by calling (218) 733-2870.

The cost of the program is $23, which includes food and a copy of the 2019 Garden Fest Recipe Book & Resource Guide. Registration can be done online at stlouiscountymn.gov/ext or by mailing a check payable to St. Louis County to: St. Louis County Extension, AP Cook Building, 2503 Rice Lake Rd, Duluth, MN 55811.

Check in begins at 5 p.m. For more information call (218) 733-2870 or visit  stlouiscountymn.gov/ext.

This program is sponsored and conducted by St. Louis County Extension and University of Minnesota/St. Louis County Master Gardeners.
