Incident Summary:

Deputies from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the call of a vehicle being hit by a train in Lakewood Township. Vanhala was the driver and single occupant of the passenger car that was involved. Vanhala suffered substantial injuries from the crash and was transported by ambulance to Essentia St. Mary's in Duluth. His current condition is unknown at this time.

The preliminary investigation shows that Vanhala failed to yield to the train, causing it to crash into the side of his vehicle as he drove through the railroad crossing. Alcohol is also believed to be a factor in the collision. The North Shore Scenic Railroad train that was involved in the crash, was carrying passengers at the time of the crash. There were no injuries reported on the train from its staff or passengers. The train suffered only minor damage, while the passenger car is a total loss.
