Incident Summary:

 

On July 2, 2019 at approximately 2019 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to Little Grand Lake near Sampo Beach for a water emergency.  A fourteen year old juvenile male had been under the water for multiple minutes.  Upon squads arriving, bystanders had removed a  juvenile male from the water.  CPR and life saving measures where initiated immediately.  It was reported that three juvenile boys where swimming out to a diving dock that was approximately seventy-five yards off shore.  At some point, one of the juveniles went under water and never emerged.  The other boys began yelling for help, and bystanders from the beach and from boats in the water dove in and began looking for the boy.   Bystanders were able to locate the boy at the bottom of the lake in approximately twelve to fifteen feet of water unresponsive.  Swimmer inexperience is believed to be the cause of the incident.  Solway Fire Department, Grand Lake Fire Department, St.Louis County Sheriff's Rescue Squad, and Mayo Clinic Ambulance where involved in the rescue efforts.  The juvenile was transported to the hospital and is in critical condition.

UPDATE:

The juvenile male swimmer's name is David Beck of Superior, Wisconsin.

On July 4, 2019, The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was contacted by David Beck's family.  The family advised that the David had passed away over night due to medical complications that arose from being under water.  The family said they were extremely appreciative for all of the work and effort put in by those involved during this incident.
