St. Louis County to  receive $137,000 reimbursement for MNLARS expenses

When Minnesota's new Licensing and Registration System (MNLARS) debuted last summer, it created a variety of inconveniences for citizens, and also considerable expense for the deputy registrars trying to still help people with their vehicle licensing needs. This included St. Louis County, which operates the the Auditor's Service Center at the Miller Hill Mall.

As reimbursement for staff overtime and other expenses related to MNLARS, St. Louis County will receive $137,674.09 from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The reimbursement grant is intended to offset the negative financial impacts to Deputy Registrars created by the MNLARS release.

"The staff at the Auditor’s Service Center worked tirelessly to provide the best service they could, given the circumstances," said St. Louis County Auditor Nancy Nilsen. "They went above and beyond to be as helpful as possible, and I am very proud of each and every one of them. We are grateful to the state for reimbursing us for some of the extra costs we incurred during this implementation."

The Minnesota Legislature this past session allocated $13,000,000 to be disbursed in grants to deputy registrars. The specific amount given to each deputy registrar was determined by the state using a formula that factored the number of transactions filed during certain time periods and other considerations.

The Auditor's Service Center is located on the back side of the Miller Hill Mall between JCPenney and the former Younker's. In addition to handling vehicle licenses and registrations, the Service Center also assists with updating driver’s licenses and passports, DNR vehicle licenses (boat, ATV, off-road vehicles, and snowmobiles) and property tax payments.
