Tax Forfeited Land Auction results in nearly $700,000 in sales

Nine tax forfeited homes and more than 20 other properties are back in private ownership following today's Tax Forfeited Property Auction. All together, 30 tax forfeited properties were purchased, adding them back to the property tax base, for a total of $690,145. Properties sold ranged in price from $87,500 for a large lot with a two-bedroom structure in Morse Township; to $45 for a small triangular shaped parcel in Winton.

All parcels not purchased at the auction are now available for sale on a first come, first served basis through the St. Louis County Land and Minerals Department. There are more than 250 properties now available for sale. The list of those properties, along with results from today's auction, can be found online at stlouiscountymn.gov/landsales

Today's sale was the second of the year, and featured approximately 100 tax forfeited properties, including more than 20 houses in communities throughout St. Louis County, plus recreational land, buildable lots and several waterfront properties with  cabins from the county's former lakeshore lease program. One more auction is scheduled for later this year - on October 10 in Virginia.

Within St. Louis County there are nearly 900,000 acres of tax forfeited land, which the County's Land and Minerals Department is responsible for managing. Most of the land is maintained for forest management, however, the County is working to sell parcels that are not planned for management as a way to encourage development and increase the property tax base.
