Incident Summary:
On February 21, 2019 Investigators with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension executed a search warrant at a residence in Rice Lake. A former resident of the home was believed to have manufactured a substance known as Dimethyltryptamine or “DMT”, which is a schedule I controlled substance. DMT is a consumed as a psychedelic drug, similar in some respects to LSD. Though it can be chemically synthesized, there are certain Amazonian plants that contain chemical compositions used to facilitate the process. This process can be readily found on the internet. Clandestine labs making DMT pose a flammability risk due to the solvents that are used in the process.
Suspected DMT along with associated ingredients and precursors were found at the search warrant. Several mason jars of brownish liquid with a clear top layer were collected as evidence.
The BCA Crime Lab was able to test samples of the substance and confirmed it is DMT. This is only the third known instance of DMT in the state of MN in the past decade. Law Enforcement agencies on the west coast have been dealing with this drug for longer. St. Louis County Sheriff’s Investigators consulted with drug task force officers from LAPD for best practices in handling such investigations.
As a result of this investigation Donald Alan Rankin was arrested and arraigned in St. Louis County district court this morning for 1st Degree Sale/Manufacture of a Controlled Substance MN statute 152.021.1(5)
His bail was set at $75,000
