Incident Summary:

On February 16th at approximately 5:54 P.M. the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office was notified of a snowmobile crash with injuries on the Cook Area Snowmobile Trail, near the Vermillion River in the area of Buyck, MN.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel located the crash scene approximately 3 miles east of County Rd. 422 on the snowmobile trail. It appears that the crash happened on a straight part of the trail just after a curve. MacDonald was the 2nd to last in a larger group of snowmobilers, when the last person in the group the came upon the crash scene.  MacDonalds snowmobile had left the trail and stuck a tree, throwing him from the machine. Despite the extensive efforts of other snowmobilers passing by, first responders, and other medical personnel, MacDonald died at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but initial indications are that speed and alcohol are factors.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by Cook Ambulance and Fire, Virginia Ambulance, North Memorial Air Medical, U.S. Forest Service, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, MN State Patrol, and the MN DNR.
