Two area women win scholarships from MN Sheriffs Association
The Minnesota Sheriff's Association (MSA) has announced its annual list of scholarship winners, and two area women among the 20 recipients. Alida Hogan of Duluth and Nellie Torgerson of Saginaw each received a $600 scholarship to assist with education costs as they pursue a degree that will lead to a career in law enforcement.
St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman presented Hogan and Torgerson with checks on behalf of the MSA.
Hogan is a student in the Law Enforcement Program at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and hopes to one day work as a police officer or deputy. She has a background working with people with disabilities and hopes to incorporate that experience into her law enforcement work.
Torgerson also is a student in the Law Enforcement Program at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. In addition, she already has a Bachelor's Degree in Criminology from the University of Minnesota - Duluth, and works as a Senior Court Clerk for the Sixth Judicial District.
"As much as I enjoy presenting these scholarships to local students, it's particularly pleasing this year to see two female students chosen as winners," said Sheriff Ross Litman. "Recruiting more female applicants is both a goal and a challenge for many law enforcement agencies, including our own, so it's good to see quality prospects pursuing this profession."
The MSA awards scholarships each year to law enforcement students to assist with training and education expenses. This year’s recipients represent a broad spectrum of applicants, and were chosen based on qualifications and academic excellence that reflect the dedication and pride of those choosing to enter the difficult but rewarding profession of law enforcement and public service. Additional information about the award and the MSA can be found online at mnsheriffs.org.
