Incident Summary:
On Saturday October 6th, at approximately 12:30 A.M., St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies, St. Louis County Sheriff's Rescue Squad, Orr Ambulance, Crane Lake Fire and First Responders, and Hibbing Ambulance responded to the report of a boat crash on Crane Lake in Voyageurs National Park.
The 24' cuddy cabin styled boat struck the southern tip of Indian Island after a mechanical malfunction with the spotlight caused it to stop working. As the driver of the boat was attempting to slow the boat due to the loss of lighting, they struck the island causing the boat to come to rest well up on the rocky edge of the island.
Two female occupants were in the cabin area at the time of the crash. One was uninjured (33 yrs old), and the other sustained significant injuries and was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.
The male driver and male passenger were transported to the Cook Hospital for minor injuries.
The names of the involved individuals are being withheld pending notification of family members.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
