Fall Garden Fest to feature cabbage and kohlrabi

It's not often they're the center of attention, but cabbage and kohlrabi will be the stars of the show during St. Louis County Extension's annual Fall Garden Fest. This year's program, "Cabbage Patch Kin," will be Thursday October 18, at 5:30 p.m., at St. Lawrence Church in Duluth.

Kohlrabi is Duluth’s Vegetable of the Year and is experiencing new popularity as a nutritious replacement for carbohydrates in the diet. Meanwhile, the versatile cabbage has been a mainstay of diets in northern Minnesota for years. Both are part of the cabbage family and can be easily grown in this area.

Cabbage Patch Kin will feature growing tips, taught by St. Louis County Horticulturist, Bob Olen,  plus ideas on how to cook with these vegetables. This year’s celebrity chef will be Francois Medion from the Duluth Grill, who will demonstrate recipes and cooking techniques. The program will also include a presentation, Fermentation: Easy Steps to Making Kimchi and Sauerkraut.

Participants will have the opportunity to sample numerous cabbage and kohlrabi dishes prepared by the St. Louis County Master Gardeners, and will receive a resource and recipe book published specifically for this event.

The cost of the program is $23. Check in begins at 5 p.m. St. Lawrence Church is located at 2410 Morris Thomas Rd. in Duluth.  For more information call (218) 733-2870 or visit
