Incident Summary:

On September 22nd at approximately 4:07 P.M., St. Louis County Sheriff's Deputies, Buhl Ambulance, Hibbing Ambulance, and Life Link air medical were dispatched to the report of an ATV crash with injuries near the Buhl City park on Memorial Dr., within the city of Buhl.

Upon arrival to the scene, first responders found an ATV that appeared to have been traveling West on Memorial Drive at a high rate of speed. The ATV left the tar roadway into the grassy ditch area of the city park, traveled through the air a short distance, and then landed and ultimately flipped end over end multiple times, ejecting both the 21 yr old male and 19 yr old female occupants.

As first responders were tending to the victims of that crash, they were alerted to another ATV crash that had occurred at the same time near the intersection of Jefferson St. and Memorial Dr. just a few hundred feet away from where the first crash had taken place.  The 25 yr old male driver had turned around in the middle of the roadway in an attempt to assist in the original crash, and ultimately rolled his ATV over pinning him underneath, until he assisted by neighbors in the area.

The 21 yr old male was air lifted from the scene to St. Luke's hospital in Duluth, and later to a Twin Cities hospital for life threatening injuries. The 19 yr old female and the 25 yr old male were transported to Fairview University Medical Center - Mesabi in Hibbing where they were both treated for non life threatening injuries.

The cause of both crashes remain under investigation by the Sheriff's office, but speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors for both.
