Traffic signals to get safety upgrade along Maple Grove Road
Four traffic signals along Maple Grove Road in Hermantown and Duluth will be getting an upgrade next week, improving the safety for motorists making a left turn. The traffic signals are located on Maple Grove Road at the intersections of Loberg Avenue, Haines Road, Burning Tree Road and Mall Drive.
The left turn signals will be converted to include flashing yellow arrows. The result will be better consistency in the signals used along the corridor as well as safer left turn movements. After the upgrade, motorists in the left turn lane will still see a green arrow when it's their turn to drive. However, when drivers making a left turn must yield to oncoming traffic, the signal will switch to a blinking yellow arrow. Studies have shown that flashing yellow arrows are more intuitive for drivers to understand to proceed with caution, rather than the traditional solid green light.
Work on the signals begins Monday, September 24, and is expected to be complete by the end of the week. Drivers should expect lane closures and some delays while the work is being done, particularly for vehicles make left turns. As always, motorists are urged to stay alert and slow down when traveling through a work zone.
Several other intersections in the area already have the flashing yellow arrow, including on Maple Grove Road at Stebner Road, and on Trinity Road at Mall Drive.
