Scholarships available for law enforcement students

The Minnesota Sheriff's Association (MSA) is offering 15 scholarships worth $600 each, and St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman wants to make sure law enforcement students in this area apply for it. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 sheriffs of the State of Minnesota. The scholarship program acknowledges the financial needs of students, as well as the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career.

“The Board of Directors feel peace officers in our democratic society have complex duties to perform,” said Litman. "MSA recognizes some students need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically."

Since 2013, six students from St. Louis County have won MSA scholarships.

Scholarships are  available to students currently enrolled in one of the following three categories: a mandated POST Skills Program, the second year of a two-year law enforcement program, or the third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program.

The Scholarship Committee, in making its selection of awards, intends on achieving representation from all geographic areas of the state. The deadline to apply is October 12, 2018. Scholarship awards will be announced in December.

Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, or can be found online at stlouiscountymn.gov/sheriff or mnsheriffs.org.
