St. Louis County Planning and Community Development staff has been working to update the Comprehensive Land Use Plan for more than a year. Once complete, it will provide the blueprint for land use development and change through 2035, guiding future policy decisions on land use, public investment, infrastructure improvements and intergovernmental cooperation, all with the goal of fostering a vibrant and healthy county. The goal is to complete the plan and adopt and implement it in 2019.
The county currently has adopted land use plans for most areas where the county has land use authority. However, these plans were originally adopted in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There have been various updates to the plans over the years, but they remain cumbersome, outdated and in many cases obsolete.
A series of initial public meetings for input took place in August of 2017. The county has also held focus groups and meetings with township representatives, other public agencies and various special interest groups. SRF Consulting Group has assisted with the process.
The first draft of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan and the goals and objectives can be found online at planslcmn.com. The alternative future land use maps will be made available at the workshops. This project focuses on areas within the county’s zoning jurisdiction. It excludes cities, townships with their own zoning, and state and federal lands A detailed map of the study area can be found on the project website.
Anyone who would prefer to submit written comments about the draft plan and goals and objectives should mail them to: Mary Anderson, Physical Planning Manager, St. Louis County Planning and Community Development, Northland Office Center, 307 1st Street S., # 117, Virginia, MN 55792, or email andersonm3@stlouiscountymn.gov. Comments also can be submitted through the project website.
