Tax forfeited land auction results: 33 properties sold for $855,935

The houses were popular. So were two lots with frontage on Lake Superior. Today's St. Louis County Tax Forfeited Properties Auction resulted in 33 sales, for a total of $855,935. Among those sales: nine homes were purchased in seven different communities, including Duluth, Hibbing, Ely and Virginia. Two North Shore properties, each approximately three acres with frontage on Lake Superior and a sale price starting at $57,800; sold for $81,000 and $87,000 respectively following competitive bidding from multiple interested buyers.

With more than 160 properties for sale, this tax forfeited land sale - the second of the year - was the largest in memory in terms of the number of properties being offered.

The 25 acre site where the former Clover Valley School did not sell. It, and all other parcels not purchased at the auction, are now available for sale on a first come, first served basis through the St. Louis County Land and Minerals Department. The County will be offering one additional tax forfeited land auction this year - on October 11 in Virginia.

Within St. Louis County there are nearly 900,000 acres of tax forfeited land, which the County's Land and Minerals Department is responsible for managing. Most of the land is maintained for forest management, however, the County has been trying to sell parcels that are not planned for management as a way to encourage development and increase the property tax base.
