Incident Summary:

On April 28th at 1820 hours the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to the call of a female that had fallen through the ice on Lake Superior, off of Park Point. Buchanan was walking her dogs on the ice when one of her dogs fell through the ice. While she was attempting to rescue her dog, Buchanan also fell through and was unable to get out. A bystander on the beach called 911. Once on scene two St. Louis County Deputies were able to locate Buchanan and keep her head above the water. Both deputies were laying on the ice holding onto Buchanan hands, while Duluth Fire staff and several citizens were able to pull on the deputies' legs rescuing Buchanan from the water.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office is advising everyone to stay off the ice on area waterways for the remainder of the season. This is the second person to go through the ice today and the third with in a week, one of which resulted in a fatality. No ice in the area is considered safe at this time.
