Mary Garness hired as director of Public Records and Property Valuation

St. Louis County has hired Mary Garness as the new director of Public Records and Property Valuation. In this role, she will lead both the recorder and assessor departments, which are responsible for recording and indexing more than 150 different kinds of legal documents. She replaces Mark Monacelli, who retired in March after more than 30 years working for St. Louis County.

Garness previously worked as the city administrator for Ashland, Wisconsin. She'd worked for Ashland for 12 years in a variety of capacities including city clerk, human resources director and several other professional capacities. Garness has a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Wisconsin, Superior.

"We look forward to Mary's broad leadership skill set and experiences," said County Administrator Kevin Gray. "With her background in city administration, she brings a customer service focus and business understanding, and will be able to further develop our many community and industry partnerships."

"I am excited at the opportunity to assist in positively impacting how the Public Records and Assessment Departments serve both external and internal customers," said Garness. "Further, the uniqueness of the County, its people and beautifully diverse landscape, were all a huge draw for me."
