Incident Summary:
On February 9, 2018, at approximately 3:03 PM, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, along with members from the Virginia Fire & Ambulance Service, Pike-Sandy Fire and First Responders and North St. Louis County Rescue Squad, responded to a single snowmobile accident on the Laurentian Snowmobile Trail approximately 3 miles East of HWY 53 in rural Virginia, MN in Wuori Township. The lone male operator had been traveling last in a group of 10 riders heading westbound on the trail. The male operator appeared to have lost control on a right hand curve, left the trail, and was thrown from his snowmobile. The male operator was transported by Virginia Ambulance personnel from the scene and eventually flown by North Memorial Air Medical to Essentia Health- Duluth for non-life threatening injuries. The accident remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. The identity of the male operator is being withheld pending notification of family members.
