Dreaming of gardening? Extension announces "Growing North" program

The ground will be frozen for months and more snowstorms are pretty much a sure thing. But that doesn't stop gardeners from dreaming of working in the dirt and the eventual harvest. That includes the gardeners at St. Louis County Extension who are making plans for their first gardening program of the year.

"Growing North" will be Thursday, February 15, 12:30-4:30 p.m. at the Mt. Iron Community Center, 8586 Enterprise Drive in Mt. Iron. Registration begins at noon. It's the first workshop of the year, presented by St. Louis County Extension Educators Bob Olen and Kendall Dykhuis, as well as local growers and greenhouse operators.

The program will feature presentations on growing great tomatoes in northern Minnesota; successfully growing onions; Honeyberries - a new fruit for Minnesota; and how to combat a new fruit pest, the Spotted Winged Drosophila.

The cost of the program is $23, which includes handout materials, refreshments and the 2018 vegetable variety list developed by the Extension Office. For more information about the program or to register, call the Extension Office at (218) 749-7120 or visit stlouiscountymn.gov/ext.
