St. Louis County Board approves $398 million budget for 2018

With a focus on maintaining and building upon core services, the St. Louis County Board has unanimously approved its 2018 budget in the amount of $397,918,261.

In addition to funding the core services of public health and human services, public works, taxpayer services and public safety; the 2018 budget directs additional resources to substance abuse and mental health, and addresses critical infrastructure needs. It also makes additional investments to support families providing foster care, offset state funding cuts impacting vulnerable adults, and supports programs serving youth.

Roughly a third of the annual budget, $132 million, comes from the property tax levy. The levy will increase by 4.45 percent next year, however the county's property base has grown by more than four percent, offsetting the impact of the levy increase on taxpayers.

Commissioner Keith Nelson, who chairs the Finance Committee, said, "In all my years on this Board, this budget is one of the ones I’m most proud of because of the challenges that were in front of us in this community, and those challenges were many. This budget meets those challenges."
