Incident Summary:
On November 16th, 2017 at approximately 9:30 PM, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, along with members from the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, the Minnesota State Patrol and a State Conservation Officer responded to a report of an overdue / lost hunter. Ainsworth had been hunting with a couple of other hunters in his party. The others in his hunting party attempted to find him for about 4 hours before calling the Sheriff's Office for help. When he stopped hunting for the evening, he got lost and had ended up walking in circles. Ainsworth eventually found his way back to the cabin using a compass. He found his way back at around midnight as the rescue squad was searching for him. He was not injured in any way nor did he require any medical treatment.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office strongly encourages those who go out into the woods to bring and be familiar with the use of an ordinary, non-battery powered compass.
