Garden Fest 2017 to focus on onions, includes onion recipe contest

You'll laugh. You'll (possibly) cry. And best of all, you'll get to sample some great dishes - all prepared with onions. That's the agenda for Garden Fest 2017 as it focuses on this year's featured vegetable - the onion. Garden Fest 2017 is October 26 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church, 2410 Morris Thomas Road in Duluth.

Garden Fest will include Chef Dave Sullivan and his crew from The Rustic Inn sharing ideas and tips for using onions in some delicious dishes. Sullivan is known for his educational and entertaining presentations, and for his onion rings. Bob Olen, St. Louis County horticulturist, will explore the history, cultivation and storage of onions. St. Louis County Master Gardeners will have dishes featuring onions for participants to sample, and there will be an onion recipe contest judged by local celebrities. Contest entries should be for soups, breads or appetizers featuring onions and must be pre-registered by contacting County Extension at (218) 733- 2870. The number of entries may be limited.

All of the onion recipes and growing information is included in a Garden Fest Recipe and Resource book that will be given to attendees. The cost to participate is $25.

Garden Fest is presented by the St. Louis County Extension Service and St. Louis County Master Gardeners. Check-in for the evening begins at 5 p.m. To learn more about the program or registration details, contact St. Louis County Extension at (218) 733-2870, or visit stlouiscountymn.gov/ext.
