The Power of Perspective is theme of 35th annual Health and Human Service Conference
Why is it that a child sees a dandelion as a flower, but adults see it as a weed? The dandelion doesn't change; it's our perspective that does. This is an observation made by Dr. Maura Cullen, who will provide the keynote address at the 35th annual St. Louis County Health and Human Services Conference on October 12 at 10:30 a.m. in the DECC's Symphony Hall.
Cullen is considered one of the foremost authorities on issues of diversity and leadership, and is praised for her ability to simplify complex issues in an entertaining and educational way. She holds a doctorate in Social Justice and Diversity Education, and is the author of 35 Dumb Things Well-Intended People Say.
The conference will begin with a pipe ceremony led by Roxanne DeLille outside the DECC Harborside entrance at 7:45 a.m. The opening session also will feature a musical welcome from the Lake Superior Youth Chorus, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
This year's conference has the theme The Power of Perspective, and is expected to draw 3,000 participants from the public and private sector. The conference spans two days, October 12-13, at the DECC, and will offer 106 workshops, 16 institutes and more than 150 exhibits. Workshop topics this year will include Social Work in the Digital Age, Moving Beyond Labels and Assumptions, and The Challenge of Climate Change to Health and Human Services; plus several presentations on self care to avoid burnout, and the interactive exhibit "Words are Powerful".
The online preregistration deadline is Friday, October 6. Walk-in registration is available on both days of the conference beginning at 7:30 a.m. Cash or check will be accepted. The registration fee is $75 if done by October 6, or $90 the day of the conference. For students, the cost is $50 if registering by October 6, or $80 at the door.
The St. Louis County Health and Human Services Conference is the second largest in the state for health and human services professionals, offering valuable opportunities for networking, sharing of innovative ideas and strengthening services provided. In addition to St.Louis County, which sponsors the annual conference, more than 60 community organizations contribute to the conference’s success as co-sponsors.
