21st Avenue East in Duluth to re-open by end of day Tuesday
Progress rebuilding 4th Street in Duluth continues, and with it comes good news for the estimated 17,000 motorists who typically use 21st Avenue East. The Avenue is expected to reopen next Tuesday, September 26, at 5 p.m. It's has been closed since August 23, with vehicles detoured over to 24th Avenue East and Kent Road, as crews have worked on the intersection at 4th Street.
When the road re-opens, the traffic signal at 4th Street will not be operational, as there will be no cross traffic at 4th Street.
Meanwhile, work continues on 4th Street between 19th and 23rd Avenues East. This segment of the road is expected to be complete by late October. When this segment of 4th Street reopens, the traffic signal at 21st Avenue East will again be activated.
Construction on 4th Street has been a multi-year project, with the County rebuilding the road at the same time the City of Duluth replaced the utilities beneath it. The final phase of the project, from 23rd Avenue East to Wallace Avenue, and on Wallace Avenue up to Arrowhead Road, will be completed next year.
