Incident Summary:
On the evening of September 15, 2017 the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office receicved a 911 report from family members of Darlene Lukovsky. She was reported as missing. Family members said she was last known to be at the grocery store in Duluth and would have been traveling to her home off of the west side of Island Lake, in Fredenburg Township. She had spoken with family by phone at about 1:30PM and said she was heading home from the grocery. Darlene was long overdue for returning home and this was very unlike her.
Family and Sheriff's deputies along with Rescue Squad volunteers began to search the likely routes she would have traveled home. It was foggy out at the time Darlene would have been traveling and it was believed she may have lost her way.
After 1:00AM her vehicle (Honda CR-V) was found completely submerged in Island Lake, off of Bear Island Rd, and her body was recovered from the water. It appears Darlene missed a curve in the road, possibly due to the foggy conditions, and drove into the water. Efforts to remove the vehicle from the lake will continue this weekend.
The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine cause of death. The incident remains under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
Darlene was to turn 80 years old tomorrow (Sunday).
