MN Sheriffs' Association announces scholarship opportunity for law enforcement students

The Minnesota Sheriff’s Association (MSA) is again offering scholarships to law enforcement students, and St. Louis County Sheriff Ross Litman encourages students in this area to apply. Up to 15 scholarships worth $600 each will be awarded across the state to those seeking careers in law enforcement.

To qualify, students must be enrolled in one of the following: a mandated Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) skills program, the second year of a two-year law enforcement program, or the third or fourth year of a criminal justice program at a four-year college.

These scholarships are available due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 Sheriffs serving each county in Minnesota. MSA recognizes some students need outside help in meeting the costs of training, even though they excel academically.

“The MSA Board of Directors recognizes that peace officers in our democratic society have complex duties to perform,” said Sheriff Litman. "This allows us to assist with some of the expenses of the pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career choice."

The Scholarship Committee, in making its selection of awards, intends on achieving representation from all geographical areas of the state. Scholarship awards will be announced by the end of the year. Five law enforcement students from St. Louis County have been awarded this scholarship since 2013.

Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office or online at stlouiscountymn.gov/sheriff. The deadline to apply is October 15, 2017.
