Incident Summary:
On August 12th at around 6PM, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, Buhl Fire, Ambulance and first responders and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded to a report of a male under the water in the Buhl pit at the end of State Street. A witness said that Gary Paternoster swam out into the pit in an effort to free his dog that was apparently caught on something in the pit. Before reaching his dog, Paternoster sank in the water. Paternoster was later recovered by the St. Louis County Rescue Squad around 8PM. Paternoster still had a pulse upon recovery and was transported by ambulance to Fairview Hospital in Hibbing where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The incident remains under investigation at this time.
