Reminder: the deadline to file for a 2015 property tax refund is Aug. 15

Homeowners and renters are reminded that if they want to file for a Minnesota property tax refund for 2015, the deadline to do so is Tuesday, August 15. They also are able to file a claim for a property tax refund for 2016, however the deadline for that isn't until August 15 of next year.

According to the Department of Revenue, more than 850,000 Minnesotans received a total of $645 million in property tax refunds last year. That averaged out to $840 for homeowners and $635 for renters.

To be eligible for a refund, a homeowner must have had a household income of less than $107,930 in 2015. For renters, the income limit in 2015 is $58,490. Forms, instructions and additional eligibility requirements can be found on the Department of Revenue's website: www.revenue.state.mn.us

"Property tax refunds are handled by the state, however we think it's important to remind our citizens that this money is out there for them," said St. Louis County Auditor Don Dicklich. "The county is responsible for collecting property taxes, but we also want to make sure people are aware of this opportunity for some real property tax relief."

Any questions about property tax refunds and eligibility requirements should be directed to the Minnesota Department of Revenue at (651) 296-3781 or (800) 652-9094.
