Incident Summary:
On July 23, 2017 at approximately 9:15pm the St Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to a fatal two car accident in the 9300 block of the Vermillion Trail in Makinen Township. When deputies arrived on scene, they located two vehicles in the ditch. One vehicle was overturned and submerged in approximately two feet of water with two occupants trapped inside. The other vehicle contained three occupants that all appeared to have non-life threatening injuries. Deputies, with the assistance of a civilian, were able to remove the passenger of the overturned vehicle. That passenger was air lifted to a Duluth hospital with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver of overturned vehicle, Rai Walden, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Driver negligence, mechanical malfunction, and weather are believed to be contributing factors.
The accident remains under investigation at this time.
