Information sessions offered on services for children, families affected by autism

St. Louis County Public Health and Human Services, along with the Autism Society of Minnesota, are continuing their outreach sessions for families of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Two new meetings - targeting parents in particular - have been scheduled on the topic of creating calm environment for both the child, the caregiver and the rest of the family. Participants also will have a chance to learn about and assemble a "Busy Box".

"Creating calm amidst external chaos: Six pillars for creating calm and the science of self regulation" will be offered:

Monday, July 24, 5-7:30 p.m.

Mt. Iron Community Center, 8586 Enterprise Drive South, Mt. Iron

Monday, July 31, 5-7:30 p.m.

Duluth Regional Care Center (DRCC), 5629 Grand Avenue, Duluth

The evening will feature discussion and tips on how to stay calm in an overstimulated day, in order to help loved ones to do the same. The techniques taught support cleaning up old patterns, beliefs, memories and traumas, leading to the creation of clearer thinking and a stronger connection both to one's self and to family members, even when chaos arises.

The session will also include information and materials to create a Busy Box, which is simply a box filled with items that a child will find engaging. Busy Boxes can be given to a child as part of his or her evening activities, as a reward, or simply to give the caregiver a break.

The information sessions will include a light dinner, followed by a presentation. Supported activities for children will be provided.

The information sessions are made possible through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. To learn more or to register for one of the sessions, contact Laura Birnbaum, St. Louis County Social Worker, at (218) 726-2492 or birnbauml@stlouiscountymn.gov.
