On 9 July 2017, at approximately 0447 hours, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a single vehicle accident in the 6400 block of Rice Lake Road. Upon arrival, deputies found a single vehicle had been traveling south on Rice Lake Road and left the roadway on the right side at a high rate of speed. The single male occupant was ejected from the car and was located approximately 10 yards from the vehicle. The occupant was alive but sustained life threatening injuries and was air lifted by LifeFlight to St. Mary's Essentia in Duluth. High vehicle speed was the major contributing factor in this accident. The accident remains under investigation.
The identity of the driver is being withheld at this time pending notification of his family.
Over the last week, the Sheriff's Office has encountered several drivers at excessive speeds on rural roadways. Speeds approaching and exceeding 100 mph have been encountered. The Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that at these speeds serious injury or death are greatly increased should the vehicle be involved in an accident. Furthermore, the Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public to always wear your seatbelt.
