New law makes it easier for disabled veterans to get property tax help
Among the new laws that went into effect in Minnesota on July 1 is a change in the requirements for disabled veterans and surviving widows to receive the Disabled Veterans' Homestead Market Value Exclusion. Previously, the state required veterans or their spouses to apply for the tax break every year. Now, they only have to apply once, unless something changes with their eligibility. This update to the law affects any veteran who has a service-connected disability rating of 70 percent or more, or whose disability is consider 100 percent total and permanent, as well as any veterans' spouses who receive dependency and indemnity compensation.
Additionally, the spouse of a deceased veteran who was 100 percent totally and permanently disabled may now qualify for the homestead exclusion even if the veteran hadn't applied or qualified for the exclusion prior to their death.
Under the Disabled Veterans Homestead Exclusion, veterans do not have to pay property taxes on their home's value up to a certain amount, depending on the severity of their disability. Anyone eligible for this exclusion should work through their County Veterans Service Officer to complete the application the first time.
Veterans and their spouses wanting to learn more about the Disabled Veterans' Homestead Market Value Exclusion or any other military benefits which they may have earned, should contact their Veterans Service Office at (218) 725-5285, Duluth; (218) 749-7110, Virginia; (218) 262-6090, Hibbing; or (218) 365-8203, Ely. Information for veterans is also available online at stlouiscountymn.gov/veterans.
