St. Louis County launches new and improved Adopt A Highway program

St. Louis County has long benefited from the volunteer efforts of groups and individuals who have "adopted" a segment of county road and donated their time to pick up the litter alongside it. Now, the Public Works Department has revamped its Adopt A Highway program to make it easier for volunteers to select a road segment and coordinate clean up activities on it, and improved the signage to give road sponsors more credit.

Anyone interested in adopting a road segment can learn about the program and see a map that shows in real time which roads are available or not available at stlouiscountymn.gov/AAH. The new online tool also includes a login option for existing volunteers, through which they can coordinate schedules with fellow volunteers and request trash bags and other assistance from Public Works.

New signage also debuted this spring to highlight the names of the volunteers who adopt highway segments.

"We are responsible for 3,000 miles of roads within St. Louis County, so we rely on and are extremely grateful for the volunteers who help keep the adjoining shoulders and ditches clean," said Vic Lund, St. Louis County traffic engineer. "They are doing a great service for us, and so we want to make it as easy as possible for them, and give them as much recognition as we can."

Adopt A Highway sponsors are asked to clean their designated road segment at least twice a year. St. Louis County provides reflective vests and trash bags for use during clean-ups, and will send crews to pick up and dispose of the bags of collected trash.
