Construction resumes April 17 on Fourth Street in Duluth
Construction to rebuild Fourth Street in Duluth will resume on Monday, April 17. With the start of the project’s second year, work will shift eastward from what was done last year. Fourth Street will be closed between 10th and 19th Avenues East beginning on April 17. Motorists on 10th and 19th Avenues East will be able to drive across Fourth Street at those intersections.
Additional work will also begin next week between Sixth and 10th Avenues East. This segment of the road will remain open to traffic, though drivers should anticipate lane closures and delays. No parking will be allowed on the lower side of 4th Street during this work.
To minimize disruption, directional signs will be placed along the detour route indicating access points to local businesses. Motorists are urged to slow down, pay attention and use caution when traveling in and near the work zone.
The entire project is expected to be complete by mid November.
With a total price tag of $13.8 million, the rebuilding of 4th Street is the largest single project ever for St. Louis County Public Works, surpassing both the Haines Road and Highland Street projects.St. Louis County and the City of Duluth are partnering on the project, which involves reconstructing approximately two miles of 4th Street for the first time in 30 years, and replacing water, gas and sewer lines underneath, some of which are more than 100 years old. Funding comes from federal and state aid, city funds and transportation sales tax revenue.
