Public meeting planned for proposed roundabout in Hermantown
The intersection of Maple Grove Road and Midway Road in Hermantown is known for having a higher number of accidents than it should, and for lengthy backups at times for motorists on Maple Grove Road attempting to cross or turn onto Midway Road.
Following an Intersection Control Evaluation study, St. Louis County Public Works engineers are proposing a roundabout be built at the intersection. They have scheduled a public meeting to discuss the proposed plans, get feedback from citizens and answer questions. The meeting will be Tuesday, April 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hermantown Public Safety Building, 5105 Maple Grove Road.
The intersection evaluation concluded that a single lane roundabout would be the best way to improve safety and reduce congestion at the intersection. Roundabouts are proven to reduce serious crashes because they eliminate high speed, right angle collisions. The proposed design would accommodate all forms of traffic from bicycles to large trucks.
"I encourage anyone who lives or drives through this area to come to the meeting, get questions answered and share feedback," said Commissioner Pete Stauber, who chairs the Public Works committee, and in whose district the roundabout would be built. "These are not decisions we take lightly. And while we are making this proposal after careful analysis of safety and traffic efficiency considerations, it's not a done deal. We want to hear from the public."
