Incident Summary:
On February 25, 2017 at approximately 2:49 PM, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, along with members from the Cook Ambulance Service and Greenwood First Responders, responded to a water emergency in the Oak Narrows of Lake Vermilion in Greenwood Township regarding a snowmobile that had gone through the ice. A nearby resident had witnessed the incident and a family member immediately called 911. The resident using his own canoe and rescue rope was able to pull Hautala out of the water. Hautala was brought to a nearby residence where they waited for the Cook Ambulance. Hautala was transported to the Cook Hospital for evaluation for non-life threatening injuries.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office urges outdoor enthusiasts to abide by "Thin Ice" warning signs and to remember that ice conditions can always be unpredictable, especially since the recent early thaw conditions in the area. Earlier this week, a vehicle had gone through the ice in shallow waters on Lake Vermilion near Pine Island. Nobody was injured in that incident.
