Vegetable gardening is focus of Extension program in Mt. Iron

By this time of year, many people are tired of digging in the snow. Here's a chance to focus on digging in the dirt and gardening. St. Louis County Extension will present an early season program on selecting and growing vegetables in the Northland. The program will be held February 8, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.  at the Mt. Iron Community Center, 8586 Enterprise Dr. S.

Bob Olen, Kendall Dykhuis and Ray Jobe will present on growing crops, including sweet potatoes and melons, in a warming climate. In addition there will be a comprehensive presentation on growing traditional (Irish) and specialty potatoes in both gardens and containers. There will also be a growers' panel on selecting favorite vegetable varieties for this area and a look at the health benefits of vegetable gardening.

All participants will receive the “2017 Vegetable Varieties for Northern Minnesota” written by horticulturist Bob Olen as well as other resource materials. The cost of the program is $22 and includes all program materials as well as refreshments.

More information about the program can be obtained online at stlouiscountymn.gov/ext or by calling the Virginia Extension Office at (218) 749-7120.
