Highway 5 to close west of Chisholm beginning Sept. 19
The next step in a two year project to re-align County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 5 west of Chisholm begins Monday, September 19. The segment of CSAH 5 from Trunk Highway (TH) 169 to CSAH 136 will be closed, and all traffic will be detoured into Chisholm via TH 169, TH 73, and CSAH 84. All vehicles traveling to Hibbing Taconite will need to enter from the north via CSAH 84. Signs will be posted on CSAH 5 this week alerting motorists to the coming changes.
Meanwhile, a temporary traffic signal is being installed at the intersection where CSAH 136 meets TH 73 in Chisholm. The signal will be turned on during the week of Sept. 26. The re-aligned portion of CSAH 5, at the temporary traffic signal, is expected to open to traffic on Friday, September 30, ending the detour on CSAH 84.
The closure of CSAH 5 will allow for work to connect the new CSAH 5 to the existing CSAH 5. This will protect the construction workers and traveling public during this critical phase of the project. The closure will also consolidate other tasks of the project into a single closure, which will reduce impact on the traveling public.
The realignment of CSAH 5 is needed to accommodate an expansion of mining operations at Hibbing Taconite, and the mining company is funding the project in accordance with state statute.
Next year, phase two of the project will involve constructing a roundabout southwest of the intersection where the temporary traffic signal currently is being installed.
