Public Works building in Ely to be renamed in honor of Mike Forsman
For 20 years, Mike Forsman served tirelessly as a St. Louis County Commissioner, with his strongest passion in the area of transportation. So it's a fitting tribute for the Joint Public Works Facility in Ely to now bear his name.
On Friday, August 12, at 11 a.m., County Commissioners, transportation industry representatives and former Commissioner Forsman, himself, will celebrate the renaming of the building as the Michael D. Forsman Public Works Facility. The building is located at 2210 East Sheridan Street in Ely.
Forsman served on the County Board from 1994 until his retirement at the end of his term in 2014. He chaired the Board's Public Works Committee for 10 of his 20 years on the Board, including during the time of the 2012 flood. He was the Board Chair in 2014, when commissioners authorized the transportation sales tax, which the Public Works Department is now using to make great progress on improving roads and bridges county-wide.
Forsman has made countless trips to St. Paul and Washington, D.C., testifying and working to gain support for St. Louis County's infrastructure needs, and for the state's as a whole. He served on the board of the Transportation Alliance for 15 years, and was honored by the group upon his retirement for his outstanding leadership and commitment to improving Minnesota's transportation infrastructure.
The facility serves as a base for public works staff from St. Louis County, the City of Ely, and Lake County.
