Super Sidewalk construction begins Monday along Rice Lake Road

A unique project begins Monday alongside Rice Lake Road, from just north of Central Entrance to Arrowhead Road. St. Louis County is building what engineers are calling a "super sidewalk." It's an asphalt, extra-wide (eight feet) sidewalk that will run along the west side of Rice Lake Road beginning at Marshall School, and will provide a safe route for people who use human power to get around.

Motorists will see lane shifts and shoulder closures, and should expect delays during the project. The Public Works Department urges drivers to slow down, pay attention and use caution when traveling through the work zone.

The 1.7 mile stretch sees considerable pedestrian and bicycle traffic with several large apartment complexes along the route. The long term vision is for the sidewalk to link to trails connecting college campuses all the way to the Lakewalk.

KGM Contractors of Cook, Minn., is doing the work, which is expected to be complete by mid-October. The project will also include storm water treatment work on the east side of Rice Lake Road. Total cost is $1.1 million, and is funded by both federal dollars and transportation sales tax revenue.
