St. Louis County assists with recovery following damaging wind storm

Tuesday evening's storm knocked over trees and caused heavy damage in a concentrated area around Island Lake, Boulder Lake and the surrounding townships.

The St. Louis County Assessor's Office will send staff to the area next week to assess the severity of damage to individual properties. Damage to structures may affect the assessed value of the property, which means the owner may be eligible for a tax credit or abatement. Residents are encouraged to contact the St. Louis County Assessor’s Office in Duluth at (218) 726-2304 with any questions.(Damage to other personal property, such as a dock, boat lift, vehicle or other equipment, will not affect the assessed value of your property. Also, trees are not considered structures for the purpose of determining abatements or credits.)

Meanwhile, the Public Works Department reports nearly all county roads are again open.Crews continue to work to remove trees and debris from the shoulder area of roads and ask motorists to use caution when driving through the area, and to avoid unnecessary travel in the area.

In some areas, power lines remain down and access to private roads is blocked. Anyone who encounters a dangerous condition should call 911 to report it.
