Spring load restrictions to be lifted for St. Louis County roads in North-Central and North Zones

Spring load restrictions, which have been in place since March 8, will be lifted next week. Beginning Tuesday, May 3, at 12:01 a.m., restrictions that had been placed on paved and unpaved roads will be lifted in the North-Central Frost Zone. The following day, May 4, restrictions will be lifted in the North Frost Zone. Certain roads may continue to have load restrictions based on their particular condition. Signs will clearly mark those roads.

The North-Central Zone includes the area south of US Highway 2 and west of State Highway 33. The North Zone includes the majority of St. Louis County, from the area north of US Highway 2 and east of State Highway 33. Information on zone boundaries can be obtained by following the Seasonal Load Limits link from the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s website at mndot.gov/loadlimits.

The ending dates for spring load restrictions vary each year based on how weather is affecting roadway strength. These dates are established by monitoring roadway strength as weather conditions change.
