Special recognitions, outreach planned for National Public Health Week

The role of Public Health is constantly evolving as needs emerge and solutions sought. In St. Louis County, like across the state and country, Public Health professionals work both one-on-one with individuals, as well as with large groups to create change at the community level.

The week of April 4-10, 2016 is National Public Health Week. To recognize the good work of Public Health professionals and to further raise awareness of their services, numerous special events are planned throughout the week.

Because much of the work of Public Health staff is done in partnership with other area agencies and professionals, the County Board will recognize two of those partners with Public Health Achievement Awards during its meeting, April 5, at 9:30 a.m. in the County Board room in Duluth. Recipients of these first-ever awards include Ruby's Pantry and Eversmiles Pediatric Dentistry.

Ruby's Pantry is a non-profit food distribution service with more than a half dozen pick up locations throughout the County. The organization encourages farm to table foods and addresses sustainable food for the community. Public Health professionals refer their maternal and child health home visiting clients, WIC clients, and adult clients to Ruby's Pantry.

Eversmiles Pediatric Dentistry in Hermantown provides dental care for many of the children served by Public Health. They are one of only a few dental providers who accept new patients who are insured through Medical Assistance.

Additionally, Public Health staff will be available with information on topics including nutrition, immunizations, child and teen checkups, and more at the following locations:

  • Whole Foods Co-op, 4426 Grand Avenue, Duluth, on April 4, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Virginia South Super One Foods, 1111 17th Street South, on April 5, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Hibbing Super One Foods, 1101 East 37th Street, on April 6, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Virginia North Super One Foods, 601 4th Street North, on April 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Duluth Plaza Super One Foods, 15 South 13th Avenue East on April 7, 4 to 6 p.m.

“Public Health professionals touch lives from before birth through our work with expectant mothers, to well into their senior years as we help elderly clients maintain independent living,” said Amy Westbrook, Public Health Division Director for St. Louis County. “At the same time, we work to achieve healthier communities as a whole by partnering with other agencies to address the various factors that affect health and well-being, such as environment, income and education level, lifestyle and genetics."

St. Louis County Public Health is a division of Public Health and Human Services. Public Health nurses, nutritionists and other staff serve citizens countywide from offices in Duluth, Virginia, Hibbing and Ely. To learn more, call (218) 725-5210 or visit stlouiscountymn.gov/publichealth.
