 March is National Kidney Month
“Why is it important to recognize the health of my kidneys?”
“Why is the health of my kidneys related to my heart or diabetes?”
“Isn’t my heart and my kidneys two different organs?”
“I really hate getting my blood drawn at the clinic. Is it really that important?”
These are a few common questions that one may ask.
Simply put, your kidneys and your heart are akin to inseparable best friends. Quite like Peanut Butter and Jelly, Tom & Jerry, or The Blues Brothers. You can’t think of one without thinking of the other.
Our kidneys play a vital role by filtering waste and excess fluids, maintaining electrolyte balances, regulating blood pressure, and producing hormones for other vital body functions. According to the Mayo Clinic, poor kidney health may lead to serious complications such as cardiovascular disease, weakened bones, anemia, damage to the central nervous system, decreased immune response, decreased libido, and pregnancy complications; to name a few.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, diabetes can have a negative impact on kidney health. Kidneys contain filters that are filled with tiny blood vessels. High sugar levels in the blood can cause these blood vessels to become narrow and clogged. When the filters do not get enough blood, less waste and fluid is removed from your body.
One may think “is this a chicken or the egg kind of topic?” However, it really is a best friends topic. Taking care of one will help in taking care of the other. Early detection can provide more effective treatment and management, which in turn, prevents complications and improves quality of life. It is essential to prioritize your kidney health.
National Kidney Foundation
One in three Americans are at risk for developing kidney disease, and high blood pressure and diabetes are the two leading causes. During National Kidney Month, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) urges Americans to learn more about their kidneys and to take steps to preserve their kidney health.
