Shakopee Police Department awarded $81,877 in federal grant funds for mental health, wellness
Rep. Angie Craig stopped by the Shakopee Police Department last week to hand deliver a federal grant award for $81,877.
This substantial federal grant award comes through the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act Program.
"This funding will be used to improve access to mental health and wellness resources for our officers, from trainings and family resources to suicide prevention interventions and more," said Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate.
Thanks to this grant funding, the department will be able to expand its Check Up from the Neck Up program, which provides annual mental health check-ups for officers.
The program expansion will include additional check-ups and training opportunities tailored to police officers and their families in several areas, including mental health, stress management, and financial literacy and how these issues impact officers. These funds will allow the department to take its wellness initiatives to the next level.
