Video: Soul Asylum performs in the UBS Forum

Soul Asylum emerged from the Minneapolis punk scene of the 1980s. The band incorporated folk, funk, and country influences into their sound. Minneapolis friends Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy and Karl Mueller decided in the summer of 1981 to start a rock band, with Murphy playing lead guitar, Mueller playing bass guitar, and Dave on drums and lead vocals. They formed a three-piece group under the name Loud Fast Rules, playing in garages, at parties, and eventually in local clubs and bars such as First Avenue. Two years later, Grant Young joined the group and took over the drums, Pirner switched to rhythm guitar, and the band name was changed to Soul Asylum. The group became known as a top live band not only locally but eventually throughout the country.

The band's raucous live sets and early releases on the hometown indie label Twin/Tone —including the albums Say What You Will, Made to Be Broken and While You Were Out —earned it a loyal fan base and widespread critical acclaim. Soul Asylum's indie success led to the band entering the major-label mainstream with 1988's Hang Time and its 1990 follow-up And the Horse They Rode In On, and achieving a platinum-level commercial breakthrough with 1992's Grave Dancers Union (3x platinum) and 1995's Let Your Dim Light Shine. Grave Dancers Union featured the international hits "Runaway Train," which won a 1994 Grammy as Best Rock Song, and "Black Gold," while Let Your Dim Light Shine (platinum) spawned the hit "Misery".In 1993 the band played at President Bill Clinton's first inaugural ball and at various social movement benefits. Soul Asylum also contributed music to many films, including Clerks.

The band went on hiatus after 1998's Candy from a Stranger, during which time Pirner released his first solo effort, Faces & Names. Soul Asylum returned to action in 2006 with The Silver Lining, Delayed Reaction six years later, and in 2018 Sony Legacy released a previously unheard live album, Live from Liberty Lunch 1992.
